3 Ames Swords: Model 1832 Heavy Artillery, Model 1840 NCO and Model 1840 Musician

American Civil War

1) US Model 1832 Foot Artillery Sword by Ames. 19" wasp-waisted spear point blade, 25.25" overall with cast brass hilt and guard. Obverse ricasso marked with an {EAGLE}/N.P. AMES/SPRINGFIELD and reverse ricasso marked U.S./1844. No scabbard present.
2) US Model 1840 NCO Sword by Ames. 32" single edged spear point blade, 39" overall with cast brass hilt and guard. Marked US/RC on the obverse ricasso and N.P. AMES/CABOTVILLE/1847 on the obverse. Includes a rough but correct pattern brass mounted leather scabbard.
3) Ames Model 1840 Musicians Sword by Ames. 28" single edged spear point blade, 34.5" overall with cast brass hilt and guard. Obverse ricasso marked US/CSL, reverse ricasso with Ames scroll mark. Includes a correct pattern brass mounted leather scabbard that is about .5" short for this blade, possibly due to shrinkage.

Condition
1) Fair. Blade heavily oxidized with a dark patina. Markings remain legible. Blade with some scattered surface oxidation, freckled roughness and some scattered light pitting. Hilt with an uncleaned patina.2) Good. Blade with a dull pewter patina and clear markings, showing scattered surface oxidation and some freckled surface roughness. Cutting edge with some minor nicks. Hilt with a rich untouched patina. Scabbard fair with repairs and damage to the leather and rather weak.3) Good to very good. Blade partly bright with scattered oxidation and old oil residue along with some scattered discoloration and minor surface roughness. Hilt with an uncleaned patina. Scabbard about very good, showing moderate wear, scuffs and crazing but solid. Sword does not seat completely in the scabbard, being about .5" shy of fully seating.
